Principles

8 principles that keep the game honest.

Principles

Start here

Eight principles guide every decision in Sense & Play. When a situation isn't covered in the guidance, start here.

1. Adoption is the work

Transformations rarely fail on the framework. They fail when people don't take up the new way of working, so adoption gets the same attention as delivery.

2. Sense before you play

Find the barrier point first. A game aimed at the wrong stage wastes the team's energy and goodwill.

3. Compare what people say with what the work shows

Neither source is enough alone. The gap between them is usually the most useful finding.

4. Signals pick the arena, not the score

Teams score themselves on behaviors they design together. A signal that becomes a target gets gamed and stops telling the truth.

5. The team sees its signals first

Teams read and interpret their own signals before anyone else does. Leaders see the same team-level view afterward.

6. Team level only, never individuals

No signal, score or badge ever identifies a person, and game data never feeds a performance review.

7. One play at a time

Change one mechanic per cycle so the team can see what actually moved the signal.

8. People decide, AI assists

AI sorts, summarizes and flags patterns. A person always makes the call, and participation is always opt-in.
